- UFC. Conor McGregor announces his return and next rival
- UFC. This is the only fighter who has faced both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor
Dustin Poirier hasn't been seen in a UFC octagon since falling to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.
Since then, 'The Diamond' has largely been in the background, especially as rumors he was set to retire began to gather steam.
However those suggestions seemed to quell when just last month, Poirier hinted that a potential trilogy against BMF title challenger Justin Gaeththje could be in the cards.
"Trilogy?" said Poirier.
Both fighters have been quiet over a fight, however Gaethje recently sat down and spoke on 'The Schmo'. He let it be known that he is open to fight anyone, whether it be Poirier or someone else.
"It could be anybody, you know? It could be me; it could be anybody. He's a world-class fighter at the highest level, so anytime he fights, he's spectacular alone. Obviously, we fought twice, so it makes sense, but I have no idea what's going to happen," he said.
When pressed on the matter, Gaethje added: "He (Poirier) knocked me out. I mean, I am okay with that. I am sure that it's a little bit more bitter since I was the last one to win, but it does not matter."
Door open for a trilogy
While Gaethje didn't exactly seem thrilled at the thought of a third fight against Poirier, he may not have a choice. Although his manager was reportedly looking to set up a fight against Conor McGregor, there are no guarantees that will go through.
Not to mention Gaethje is coming off a defeat to Max Holloway earlier this year at UFC 300. Although Gaethje was impressive in the fight, he came up short and will need to bounce back, making a potential Poirier fight an intriguing one.
"I think Justin Gaethje can do whatever the f**k he wants. I would like him to fight Conor McGregor or Dan Hooker," Gaethje's agent Ali Abdelaziz told TMZ Sports.
"That is what I would like to see him fight. He will get a title fight, and I will make sure Justin Gaethje will be the next number one contender. You cannot deny what this man gave up to save UFC 300. He was the star of UFC 300."
