Lionel Elika Fatupaito, the coach of the Samoan boxing team, tragically died in the Olympic Village of Seine-Saint-Denis, as reported by the Bobigny prosecutor's office.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) expressed its condolences in a statement regarding his untimely death.
According to police sources, the coach was in his room with one of the boxers around 10:20 AM when he began to feel unwell.
Despite the rapid response from the emergency services in the Village, they were unable to save his life. The IBA's statement suggested that the cause of death was initially believed to be a heart attack.
The investigation has been entrusted to the judicial police of Seine-Saint-Denis.
"We at the International Boxing Association (IBA) extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lionel Elika Fatupaito," an IBA statement read.
"Lionel's dedication and ion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss."
Luafalealo Paige Talalelei, president of the Samoa Olympic Committee, also confirmed and mourned the death of the coach, recognizing him as one of the country's leading trainers.
He was in Paris preparing boxer Tupuola Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali for the Olympic competition, which will be held at North Paris Arena and Roland Garros from July 27 to August 10.
