This past weekend saw one of the most important boxers in the sport's history continue to cement his legacy. Canelo Alvarez stepped into the ring for the 66th time in his professional career, and he came out victorious for a 62nd time. Still, fans weren't overly pleased.

Even though Canelo fought well, many fans were always going to criticize him, even if he knocked Edgar Berlanga out. To be fair, he did knock Berlanga down, but the Puerto Rican-American was not considered a great opponent. Fans want to see Canelo in mega fights, which is why David Benavidez's name always pops up when speaking about the Mexican at the moment.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga PPV and gate numbers

There are people out there who believe Canelo has fallen off, and his lack of high-level opponents has soured his reputation. If the viewership and attendance numbers from this most recent fight is any indication, though, Canelo is still "the face of boxing".

Any Canelo fight is going to sell out the arena, no matter who the opponent is. But the pay-per-view numbers are what's impressive. It's similar to his fight against Caleb Plant, but Plant was a better opponent with more name recognition and an IBF title.

It's hard to fathom what a fight between Alvarez and Benavidez or Alvarez and Terence Crawford would draw. Whether fans like it or not, Canelo is still the top dog in the entire sport.
