Lando Norris was the quickiest man on track at the Dutch Grand Prix during qualifying on Saturday as the McLaren driver secured pole position for Sunday's race.

Max Verstappen is the local hero at Zandvoort with the stands packed full of his most fanatic fans, but they had to sit and watch as his closest challenger in the World Driver's Championship snatched pole position on the final run in Q3.

Verstappen had moved to the top of the standings with his final lap but the gap was minimal, and Norris then put in an unassailable time that saw him go 3.5 tenths quicker than the Dutch driver.

Given the pace of Norris in his McLaren, there seemed to be a chance that Piastri could move ahead of Verstappen and take up a spot on the front row alongside his teammate, but the Australian's final run was underwhelming and he had to settle for third place.

His task will be to get ahead of Verstappen into turn one and make life easier for Norris.

Poor from Hamilton and Sainz

There was an expectation that Mercedes would be very quick this weekend in the Netherlands but George Russell had to settle for P4, whilst Lewis Hamilton was a surprise failure in Q2 as he will have to line up 12th.

That is one place behind Ferrari's Carlos Sainz who also went out in the second session, complaining about being held up by Nico Hulkenberg.

Whilst Red Bull will be upset with Verstappen not getting pole position, they can be fairly content with the performance of Sergio Perez who will line up in P5.

That is close enough to Verstappen that he could still help his teammate in the fight against the McLarens if he gets a good enough start.

The top 10 was completed by Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso, Alexander Albon, Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly.
