The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) is one of the most comprehensive programs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers for military who want to continue or begin their higher education. Also known as Chapter 30, this program even s you if you take correspondence classes.

Chapter 30 benefits are available to all military who have served at least three continuous years of active duty. The program provides financial assistance to eligible who want to begin or continue their education through in-person or distance learning.

The amount you receive depends on your enrollment time and the type of institution you attend, whether it be a higher education institution, a non-university degree program, on-the-job training and apprenticeships, flight training, or even correspondence classes.

What is the VA's rate for correspondence education?

Completing a correspondence training course-by mail, online, or other distance learning-may be a good option if you need to take classes from home or you live too far from a school, and your VA benefits can help you do so.

The program will reimburse you for part of the fees for your correspondence training. As of 2025, the MGIB-AD pays 55% of the established cost for the number of correspondence classes you complete. However, you must submit completed lessons to receive reimbursement.

How can I apply for the MGIB-AD?

Chapter 30 covers eligible veterans and their qualifying dependents, including spouses or adult children. If you are interested in applying and are eligible, you will have to submit your Social Security number, bank deposit information, and educational and military history.

You must also submit the VA basic information about the school or training facility you will attend. You can submit your application and documents by mail, online, or in person at your nearest VA regional office.
