The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, is a federal government initiative that provides to low-income individuals and families so that they can purchase healthy food and thus maintain an adequate diet and good health.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversees the SNAP program at the federal level, while in the state of Texas, the government organization Texas Health and Human Services is responsible for ensuring that the specific needs of residents are met.
Eligible beneficiaries to receive SNAP benefits in Texas will receive monthly benefits on an Electronic Bank Transfer (EBT) card, which in Texas is also known as the Lone Star Card, and works like a debit or credit card.
The deposited resources can be used through your EBT card to buy nutritious foods such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fruits and vegetables, as long as they are not hot items, and the purchase of tobacco, alcohol or other services or to pay outstanding bills is prohibited.
Low-income households are candidates to apply for the program, as well as unemployed people, although there are conditions for people between 18 and 52 years of age, such as time restrictions on SNAP benefits and the possibility of looking for work. Pregnant or disabled women do not have these impediments to apply.
