A moving story comes from the Caribbean, where a Canadian woman in her 50s who was traveling on the Caribbean island has lost both her hands after being attacked by a shark. The tourist was reportedly trying to take a photograph of the shark. The story was reported by the Daily Mail and also by the local authorities.
What happened to the woman that she lost both hands with the shark?
The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was on holiday in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It all happened a week ago, on Friday, February 7, at around 10:30am at Thompson's Cove beach in Providenciales. The woman was reportedly standing on the shoreline at the time of the shark attack, as she tried to get close to take a picture of it
People on the beach said her husband tried to stop the shark, but to no avail. Images that have gone viral on social media show the woman on the beach with many people around her trying to stop the bleeding caused by the shark attack that caused her to lose both hands.
Local authorities confirm the facts
Witnesses say the shark may have been on the shore for about 45 minutes. The Turks and Caicos Islands Government said in a press release that the species was "estimated to be approximately 1.8 meters long," but the species has not yet been confirmed.
The note also detailed what the tourist tried to do: "It was determined that the tourist had attempted to approach the animal from shallow water to take photographs."
As the days have gone by, it has been confirmed that the 55-year-old tourist had one hand amputated at the wrist and the other halfway up the forearm and is slowly recovering in Canada.
