Dress codes at some companies can be a controversial topic. In addition, if changes are made that do not accord with the taste or demands of the workforce, this can trigger a problem for the company or even a strike.

That's exactly what has happened in some Starbucks stores in the United States. And it was not a small number, as more than 2,000 employees have hung up their aprons and gone on strike at 120 of the brand's stores since Sunday, May 18.

A strike promoted by the Starbucks Workers United union to protest the company's change in the dress code of its workers, specifically the decision taken on Monday, May 12, on what can be worn under the famous green apron. Specifically, workers at the establishment will have to wear a black T-shirt and khaki pants. A decision that the company has implemented so that their aprons stand out.

However, the existing dress code prior to this allowed employees to opt for more flashy options and brighter colors, that is, more freedom when it comes to dressing.

Starbucks Workers United demands collective bargaining to discuss dress code

The union, which has a presence in 570 of the 10,000 Starbucks stores in the US, is advocating for collective bargaining to implement such measures, as a shift supervisor opposed to the business decision told AP: "Starbucks has lost its way (...) They are focusing on all the wrong things, such as implementing a new restrictive dress code."

On Wednesday, May 14, 1,000 workers staged a major walkout, according to the union. Starbucks said in a statement that "it would be more productive if the union put the same effort into getting back to the bargaining table that they are putting into protesting over wearing black T-shirts"
