Veterans using the Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD)-also known as Chapter 30 VA Benefits- saw updated education payment rates starting October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025. If you're using this benefit to pay for college, vocational school, or job training, your monthly payments depend on how long you served on active duty and your enrollment status.

If you served at least three continuous years on active duty, here's what you can expect to receive each month:

  • Full-time students: $2,438
  • Three-quarter-time students: $1,828.50
  • Half-time students: $1,219
  • Less than half-time, more than quarter-time: Up to $1,219 (or the cost of tuition and fees)
  • Quarter-time or less: Up to $609.50 (or the cost of tuition and fees)

For those who served between two and three years, the rates are slightly lower, with full-time students receiving $1,978 per month and other enrollment levels adjusted accordingly.

Not just for college - Trade schools and job training qualify too

Education benefits under Chapter 30 aren't just for traditional college students. If you're pursuing vocational training, apprenticeships, or on-the-job training, the payment structure works a little differently:

  • First six months of training: $1,828.50 per month
  • Months 7-12: $1,340.90 per month
  • After the first year: $853.30 per month

This tiered structure helps veterans earn while they learn, making it a great option for those entering skilled trades or other hands-on professions.

Bonus options: Can you get more money?

Yes! Some veterans can increase their MGIB-AD payments with additional incentives.

  • The $600 Buy-Up Program: If you contributed an extra $600 while on active duty, your monthly payments can increase by up to $150-adding up to $5,400 over 36 months.
  • College Fund (Kicker): Some service branches offer additional funds as an enlistment incentive, which get added to your monthly payments.

These extra programs can make a big difference, so it's worth checking if you qualify.

How to apply and get your payments

To start receiving your Chapter 30 benefits, you'll need to apply through the VA's website or visit a local Veterans Service Office. Payments are sent directly to you each month, unlike the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which sends tuition payments to schools.

The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) remains a valuable tool for veterans looking to advance their education or career. Whether you're heading to college, a technical school, or an apprenticeship, knowing your monthly payment rates will help you plan ahead and make the most of your benefits.

For more details, check out the official VA website or talk to a veterans' education counselor to ensure you're maximizing your benefits.
