April 15 marks the deadline for filing the2024 federal tax return, a key date that has remained standard since the 1950s, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday. With tax season having started in late January, many taxpayers have already fulfilled this obligation, but others are still racing against the clock.
Although it is known as "Tax Day", not all states share the same April 15 deadline. Some jurisdictions set their own tax calendars, and it is critical that taxpayers check the specific deadlines that apply in their place of residence.
In addition, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides exceptions for those who need more time. If a person is living outside the country at the time of the deadline, or was affected by a federally declared natural disaster, they may request an automatic extension to file their return without incurring immediate penalties.
While some taxpayers have already completed the process, others still have the opportunity to comply in time or to take advantage of the legal alternatives offered by the U.S. tax system.
States that have an extension for tax filing
The IRS reported that taxpayers in states that faced a natural disaster can request an extension and that in nine states the extension is automatic from April 15 to May 1, 2025.
It is also possible to apply for an additional extension before April 15. Nine states are affected by FEMA disaster declarations: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and some counties in Tennessee and Virginia due to damage caused by Hurricane Helene.
While the August 2024 floods in the Juneau area of Alaska and others in October in Chaves County, New Mexico, also applied for an extension.
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County, California, also moved the deadline for residents of this region to October 15, 2025.
