The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides monthly assistance to individuals and families with limited incomes to access adequate food. This assistance is delivered through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used at authorized stores to purchase basic foodstuffs.
One of the key criteria for accessing SNAP is household income level. This varies depending on the number of people in the household, as well as other specific factors such as the presence of elderly people, people with disabilities or dependent care expenses.
Income for a household of seven
For fiscal year 2025, a seven-person household should consider different income limits depending on their particular situation:
- No earned income (no seniors or disabled persons): gross monthly income must not exceed $5,129.
- With earned income (no seniors or disabled): the monthly gross limit is $5,918.
- With at least one member over 60 years old, with a disability or care expenses: the allowed gross monthly income is up to $7,890.
How do I know if my home qualifies
It should be noted that these amounts correspond to gross income, i.e. before deductions for taxes or other discounts. However, meeting the income limits does not automatically guarantee approval. Each application is evaluated through a budget calculation that considers essential expenses and other household conditions.
In addition, SNAP no longer requires most applicants to a resource test, making it easier for many families with savings or assets to access the program.
To find out if your household qualifies for these benefits, it is recommended to complete a formal application through the official portal www.myBenefits.ny.gov or call 1-800-342-3009 for direct guidance.
