Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby on Monday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, but his legacy-defining moment was overshadowed by the fact he accidentally hit a small child.
Guerrero Jr., 24, was dialed in during the championship round against Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays. The child in question, however, was clearly not focused.
During the broadcast, several children were in the outfield attempting to catch baseballs, and one of them was struck in the face.
The commentators didn't seem the child go to the ground in pain as other children watched over him not knowing what to do.
Fortunately, the next time the broadcast cut to the children, the one who suffered the hit was back on his feet.
Kids getting hit at Home Run Derby is normal
Twitter s were quick to point out that it's not the firt time a child gets hit during the Home Run Derby.
In fact, just two years ago, Pete Alonso nailed a kid in the head and didn't seem to notice.
Alonso, 28, was seen doing a little dance as stadium personell helped the child off the field.
Guerrero Jr. followed in his dad's footsteps to become the first father and son duo in MLB history to each win a Home Run Derby.
