Jazz Chisholm Jr. plays the game of baseball in his own way. He has an outgoing personality, and it shows up consistently in how he plays on the field.
While most baseball fans appreciate Chisholm wearing his heart on his sleeve and having fun on the diamond, being eccentric rubs some people the wrong way. And apparently, it rubbed former Miami Marlins teammates of Chisholm the wrong way.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. seemingly calls out Miguel Rojas
In an interview with former NFL players Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder on the Pivot Podcast, Jazz spoke openly and candidly about how much he hated his first three seasons in MLB.
My first three years in the big leagues were the worst three years of probably my life. You had vets that hate what you do and who you are. I had that from day one in the big leagues, for three straight seasons. From day one to year three. Our team captain trying to get me out of here.
Many have connected the dots and surmised that the team captain Chisholm talks about was Miguel Rojas, who left the team before the 2023 season. While Rojas wasn't the official captain of the Marlins, he was the longest tenured player for many years and took on a large leadership role.
Jazz Chisholm's chilling Kobe Bryant story
In the same interview, Chisholm told an emotional story about the day that Kobe Bryant died. Chisholm was in California at the time to attend Bryant's sports academy.
Kobe was my No. 1 idol. I go to L.A.. I went to the Mamba Academy and I met him and I wanted to ask him some questions but he said he had to go. Sunday I'm supposed to go and talk to Kobe, my dream is about to come true... the helicopter crash happens. I called (Derek) Jeter on the phone crying... I called him after my idol died and I said you got to step up to be my idol. And from that day on, he literally treated me like his son.
Jeter was the CEO of the Marlins from the 2018 season until right before the 2022 season began. Jeter pulled off the trade that brought Chisholm to the Marlins from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Chisholm is getting ready for his fifth MLB season. The 26-year-old has struggled to stay healthy over the last two seasons, although he made the All-Star Game in 2022 before a season-ending injury.
