North Carolina State University (NCSU) play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn has been suspended indefinitely for racist comments he made while calling the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
Hahn has called men's basketball and football games for the university since 1991.
"And amongst all the illegal aliens down in El Paso," Hahn said. "It's UCLA, 14, and Pittsburgh, six. That's with 11:15 to go in the second quarter. Let's go to the sidelines, Tony Haynes."
While some Twitter s are calling for Hahn's job, others are defending him, saying he didn't say anything that is not true.
El Paso declared a state of emergency a week before Christmas due to thousands of migrants crossing the Mexican border into the city.
Undocumented vs. illegal
The NC State broadcast rights holder, Learfield Communications, employs Hahn and confirmed his suspension in a statement.
"LEARFIELD has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network Play-by-Play announcer Gary Hahn from his agreement indefinitely following comments made during today's Duke's Mayo Bowl radio broadcast," Learfield said in a statement.
The term "illegal aliens" is offensive to those who prefer to be called "undocumented immigrants." While there are undocumented people of all backgrounds, the "illegal" tag is often only placed upon Latinos.
If Hahn apologizes and its that he did not know the severity of his verbeage, then it's possible he does not lose his job.
