Simone Biles has confirmed that she will attend Los Angeles 2028, but it could be in the stands. A few months after her stellar performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Biles itted that she is still considering her options for the next Summer Games, but it is not proving easy.
From her rise as a young gymnast at Rio de Janeiro 2016 to her spectacular comeback at Paris 2024 after the mental issues that nearly ended her career in Tokyo 2020, Biles' journey has inspired athletes across all sports.
The three gold medals she won at Paris 2024, bringing her lifetime total to 11, seemed like the perfect ending to her stellar career. However, with the next Olympic Games being held on her home turf, Biles could still make one last effort to bid farewell to gymnastics in front of her home crowd.
Simone is weighing her options
Speaking from Madrid, Spain, where she received her fourth Laureaus Award as World Sportswoman of the Year, she itted that she is still recovering after competing in Paris a few months ago. "I'm still focusing on healing physically and mentally because the Olympics take a toll on your body."
That doesn't even take into the time she would have to dedicate to a competition of that level. "A lot of people think it's a one-year commitment, but it really is the four years leading up to the Olympics."
However, competing on home soil is a powerful incentive. "It's in LA. It's back in the States, which is so exciting. But if I'm going to compete again, I'm not so sure. I will be at the Olympics, but whether it's on the floor or in the stands, it's a big decision to make."
Biles is making up for time with her family
Amid her trip to Spain, Biles confessed that she hasn't been able to reflect on her future in the sport "because I've sacrificed so much to hang out with my family, my friends, my husband, and stuff like that. So I'm really enjoying my time off before I decide if I want to go back to the gym and compete."
At 28, Biles is already extending her career beyond the average of other gymnasts. If she decides to compete in Los Angeles, she would arrive at the competition at 31, wiser and more experienced, but also with a greater physical challenge. If anyone can do it, it's Simone Biles, but it's also true that she has nothing left to prove.
