- NCAA. Flau'jae Johnson at the ESPYs: Athlete by day, rapper by night
- NCAA. LSU's intense practice is highlighted by Kim Mulkey's focus for season
Playing viral pranks on friends or family can be fun, but when the target is your boss-or worse, your head coach-you might be taking a big risk. LSU Tigers guard Flau'jae Johnson found that out the hard way when she successfully pranked Kim Mulkey with the latest trending joke on TikTok.
Despite her flashy outfits and multi-colored suits on the sidelines at Louisiana State University games, Mulkey is known for her no-nonsense attitude. The head coach isn't exactly known for casual relationships with her players, let alone jokes at her expense.
Johnson, on the other hand, is known for her laid-back and fun-loving personality, which has led her to venture into the music industry alongside her basketball career. Perhaps that's why she didn't think twice about getting Mulkey to fall for the "Just Give Me My Money" prank.
Those darn kids and their viral trends
The prank, which has taken TikTok by storm, involves a group of friends taking turns repeating the phrase "Just give me my money," usually in a funny or sing-song voice, to which the rest of the group responds with applause and cheers. But when the victim repeats the phrase, everyone stays silent, creating an awkward moment for the person being pranked.
In a chat with Paige Bueckers on the "Best of Both Worlds" podcast, Johnson explained that they first tried to prank assistant coach Bob Starkey during the team's recent trip to Greece, but he was already familiar with the joke. "He's the oldest man I know that's on TikTok, but he didn't fall for it,"Johnson joked.
That's when Flau'jae and her teammates decided to up the ante and prank head coach Kim Mulkey. "I knew Coach Mulkey was gonna fall for it. She doesn't do social media. It was the funniest thing ever-she went viral. She was low-key mad," Johnson recalled with a laugh.
As expected, the prank came with consequences. "She told me I wasn't gonna play now since I did that trend on her. So I guess that's what you do for the views. Coach Mulkey, I'm sorry," Johnson lamented.
The Tigers' trip to the Aegean Sea
The team used their downtime before the start of the 2023-2024 NCAA season to embark on a 10-day trip to Greece and Croatia. Mulkey and the Tigers toured cities like Split, Dubrovnik, and Athens, but one location made a particularly big impression on Johnson.
The Tigers guard was especially captivated by Santorini. The island's stunning landscapes and charming streets left such an impression on her that she's even considering planning her wedding there in the future.
As for the prank on Mulkey, the video has mysteriously disappeared from TikTok. While the reason is unclear, it's likely Johnson took it down to smooth things over with her coach-and to avoid the possibility of being benched next season.
