Colorado's football team is making waves as it heads into the second year under head coach Deion Sanders, exceeding expectations with an impressive start. After just five games, the program has already matched its four wins from last year, a stark improvement for a team that seemed to be struggling not too long ago.
Coming off a dominant 48-21 victory over UCF, Colorado now has time to prepare for a crucial match against Kansas State on October 12. Despite the skeptics who doubted Sanders' approach when he first took over, one high-profile figure in college football has remained steadfast in his belief in Coach Prime: former coach Urban Meyer.
In a recent discussion, Meyer opened up about his enduring confidence in Sanders, which dates back to his observations of Colorado last year-even when the team ended the season with a disappointing 4-8 record. Meyer recalled a visit to one of Sanders' practices where he saw something that many others missed.
"I went last year to see them practice... and I just thought, do my job," Meyer explained. "This is uncharted waters. I've known Coach Prime for a long time. We've been friends, and he invited me in." Meyer's firsthand experience left a lasting impression. "I went to meetings, I went to practice... and I said, 'Guys, this is not a 1-10 program.' They have good players, a couple of great players, and there's substance behind what shows up in press conferences."
Meyer insisted that the program was much stronger than it appeared, emphasizing that Sanders was laying a real foundation for success. He was convinced that what was happening behind the scenes went far beyond the public hype and charisma seen in press events. "They coach, and you're starting to see the rewards of the substance behind this stuff," Meyer added.
Colorado is proving themselves on the field
With Colorado now sitting just two wins away from securing a bowl game appearance, the program is proving that Meyer's faith wasn't misplaced. But for Sanders, a bowl game isn't the final goal-his ambitions reach much higher.
As Colorado gears up to face Kansas State on October 12, fans and critics alike are eager to see if Sanders' vision can continue pushing the Buffaloes toward new heights. Kickoff is set for 10:15 p.m. ET, and it's clear the eyes of the football world will be watching.
