- Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Will Shilo Sanders be forced to pay $11M? Judge clears path for new evidence
Fresh off g with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after going undrafted, Shilo Sanders impressed coaches at rookie minicamp with veteran-level poise and technique. The stage was set for the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders to carve out his own path, backed by a powerhouse agent and a name that commands headlines.
But just as momentum was building, a federal bankruptcy judge dealt Shilo a crushing blow: the green light for subpoenas in a high-stakes court case that could derail his future.
The ruling is part of a years-long legal battle stemming from a 2015 incident in which Sanders, then 15, allegedly assaulted former school security guard John Darjean.
Darjean claims Sanders "severely and permanently" injured him during an altercation over a cell phone and was awarded an $11.89 million default judgment in 2022 after Sanders failed to appear in court.
The documents that could end Shilo's dreams
In an attempt to escape the massive debt, Sanders filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2023. But Darjean is now aiming to prove the injury was "willful and malicious" - a legal standard that would prevent the debt from being discharged.
With the judge's approval, Darjean can now subpoena sealed documents, including police reports and internal school investigations, in hopes of proving Sanders acted with intent. If successful, Shilo - now 25 - could be on the hook for the entire amount, despite his fresh NFL paycheck.
As the legal storm intensifies, the heart of the matter remains a decade-old question: Was Shilo defending himself, or did he deliberately cause harm? The answer could shape not only his career but the broader legacy of the Sanders family brand.
