Rivals in the past, twice over, but always with respect. Two legendary warriors who perfectly exemplify what mixed martial arts is all about. And it was evident once again this week with Islam Makhachev's (27-1) congratulation to Alexander Volkanovski (27-4) after the Australian regained the featherweight title that he lost to Ilia Topuria (16-0) in February 2024.
"Congratulations, Alex Volkanovski, on your great comeback! A true champion in sport and in life," wrote the Dagestani on his social media as a congratulation to 'Volk's' victory over Diego Lopes at UFC 314. A title that handed him the belt that Topuria had vacated.
A true champion in sport and in life
The first clash between 'The Great' and Islam was in February 2023, and it was arguably the toughest fight the Russian has had since he became lightweight champion in October 2022. He won by unanimous decision over the Australian.
Months later, in October and with questionable preparation by 'Volk', Makhachev knocked him out with a head kick in the first round. It was the beginning of Volkanovski's downfall... until now he has risen, becoming the first fighter to regain a belt after coming off two consecutive losses.
He is also the first to win gold in the UFC in the lower weights (lightweight and below) once over the age of 36.
