NASA scientists baffled after finding floating rock on Mars that shouldn't be there

Humans have been working for decades to explore and learn more about one of their neighbors. Planet Mars has been the focus of NASA's efforts in recent years and, through various devices, it has managed to collect more and more data and information that detail not only the existence of life in the past, but also the idiosyncrasies of the place.

Recently, Mars has become the epicenter of all NASA's attention, and not precisely because of a discovery that allows us to understand, but rather provokes even more questions among the scientific community. Apparently, a floating skull-shaped rock has just been discovered that, they say, should not be there.

According to National Geographic's official social media , the Perseverance probe was responsible for finding this rock when it was immersed in its descent down the lower slope of Witch Hazel Hill in Jezero Crater. This is where a magnificent discovery has taken place that has experts on their feet and is the subject of analysis.

The image shown was captured a month ago, on April 11, 2025, thanks to the Mastcam-Z camera. The media outlet defines it as a "floating rock" because it should not be in that place and it is believed that it may have been transported there at some point.

Beyond this, what really worries NASA experts is the strange and Machiavellian shape of the rock. It is dark, eroded and somewhat skull-shaped, which has led to the curious name given to this rock, as National Geographic indicates: 'Skull Hill'.
