The College Football Playoff National Championship, a postseason college game used to determine a national champion of the NCAA Division, could offer a glimpse of NFL's stars of tomorrow as they teams take to the field on Monday January 8.
It is traditionally held on the second Monday in January and serves as the last game in the college football playoff, a bracket tournament between the best four teams in the country.
Washington take on Michigan State at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas in what will prove to be a fine prelude to the Super Bowl next month.
Neither team has tasted success at college level since the 1990s, with Michigan the last of the two sides to triumph back in 1997. Washington have had to wait 32 years since their last Championship victory.
And it is fair to say there will be some unknowns going into the game, given that the recent Championship games have been dominated by Alabama State and Georgia.
Who has won the most College National Championships?
Going all the way back to the first recorded champions in 1869 shows just how closely contested this fixture has been over the past 154 years.
Yale lead the way with 18 titles, while Alabama have closed the gap - with five victories in 12 years - to bring their tally up to 16. Princeton, the very first champions of U.S college football, are third with 15.
Michigan have the most victories in college football but are some way behind when it comes to titles, with nine pieces of silverware in their trophy cabinet - many of which predated the Second World War.
With CFP only, it is easy to see where Georgia, Clemson and Alabama have dominated. At the very least this year, there will be a new name carved into the trophy as neither Michigan nor Washington have won it in the CFP era.
