The Chicago Bears (3-14) "earned the honor" of selecting the top prospect available in the 2023 NFL Draft after Sunday's 29-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the season finale, combined with the Houston Texans (3-13-1) beating the Indianapolis Colts.
Chicago was seeded second in the draft before the start of Week 18, but the Texans played with great pride and dramatically beat the Colts 32-31 to move into second place.
The Bears had a disastrous season, their second three-win season since 2016.
Justin Fields did not play on Sunday due to a hip injury suffered a week earlier against the visiting Detroit Lions.
This is the third time in draft history that Chicago has selected first overall. The previous time, however, was 76 years ago in 1947.
Gaps to fill for the Chicago Bears
Fields finished the season just 64 rushing yards shy of breaking the record for most yards on the ground by a quarterback in a single season.
His team, however, finished dead last in rushing offense despite being the best ground offense in the league. Fields will definitely need more help next season.
Chicago must strengthen its defensive and offensive lines. They recorded the fewest catches per game (1.3) and barely pressured opposing quarterbacks on 20.9% of the snaps in which the opponent was late to throw. They were the worst team in this category.
Georgia Bulldogs' Jalen Carter, a stellar defensive tackle, should be on the franchise's radar. Their first pick could also be a great bargaining chip to draft several players and fill spots on more than one line.
