Travis Kelce fine fires up fans but they don't suffer because his huge financial empire won't break up

The Kansas City Chiefs' fans laughed off the fine handed to Travis Kelce for his tribute to Tony Gonzalez after eclipsing his franchise touchdowns record, before attacking the NFL for taking the "fun" out of the game.

Upon making a Christmas Day catch against the Pittsburgh Steelers, his third of the season, the 35-year-old tight end jumped to the NFL goal and threw the ball between the hoops to pay homage to the 48-year-old by copying his trademark celebration.

That's because Taylor Swift's boyfriend just moved past Gonzalez's Chiefs' record to lead the franchise in receiving touchdowns outright with 78, and showed a humble nature to pay to the legend in the moment.

All the same, the NFL slapped his wrists with a $14,069 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct with the use of a prop (the ball and crossbar) as fans of the sport and Chiefs laughed at the league for the decision.

One wrote to X.com, formerly Twitter, "Lol the league is so soft with these fines. 14k for dunking over the crossbar. What a joke. Glad to see that he did it to honor a great like Gonzalez."

A second added, "Kelce's podcast is worth millions already. This is a $14k investment which will X many times over."

And a third commented, "No Fun League," mocking the anacronym for NFL.

So did another , who said, "No fun league strikes again."

Gonzazlez offers to pay the fine

Kelce, of course, is worth over $130m through his successful career in the sport so the fine won't be an issue for him. If he needed to, he could always ask his billionaire girlfriend to spot him the cash until payday too.

Funnily enough, Gonzalez himself offered to pay the fine if Kelce did the dunk so it seems as though everyone disagrees with the NFL on the matter.

The Chiefs are next in action against the Denver Broncos on January 5 at the Empower Field. It's unknown if Kelce will play the game or will be rested for Week 18 ahead of the 2024/25 NFL Playoffs.
