With the 2025 NFL Draft fast approaching, teams across the league are finalizing their draft strategies, and the Kansas City Chiefs are no exception.

Despite their recent success, the Chiefs face significant roster challenges, particularly in the trenches.

Kansas City's Draft dilemma

On the defensive side, All-Pro Chris Jones remains the only defensive tackle under contract for 2025, raising concerns about depth and long-term stability.

This pressing need has led to growing speculation that Kansas City may use its first-round pick to reinforce the defensive front.

One name that continues to surface in connection with the Chiefs is Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Harmon has drawn attention for his rare blend of size, speed, and power.

According to NFL Network's Eric Edholm, Kansas City is a prime candidate to trade up in the first round to secure the dominant lineman, aiming to get ahead of other defensive line-needy teams.

Given the franchise's history of investing in interior defensive linemen early in drafts, prior to a recent dip in such selections, Harmon could be a return to form for Andy Reid's draft philosophy.

The Oregon star had a breakout 2024 season, leading all college interior linemen with 55 pressures while setting career highs in tackles, sacks, and forced fumbles.

His disruptive ability made him a key anchor for one of the nation's top defensive fronts.

If selected in the first round, Harmon would become the first Oregon defensive tackle to achieve that milestone since Haloti Ngata in 2006.

However, while his upside is undeniable, some analysts believe his raw power needs refinement at the next level.

Despite the potential impact Harmon could have on Kansas City's defense, the Chiefs have another major concern: their offensive line.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked 36 times last season, highlighting a glaring issue that could warrant prioritization in the draft.

The decision to pursue Harmon, or instead focus on protecting Mahomes, could be pivotal in shaping the team's future.

Kansas City currently holds eight draft picks, including their original selections in the first four rounds and additional picks acquired via trades.

The stakes are high for the reigning AFC powerhouse, will they make a bold move to trade up for Harmon or will they pivot toward an offensive lineman?

We will find out on April 24.
