The Kansas City Chiefs have started training for the 2025 NFL season, with a clear goal: to once again dominate the competitive American Conference and return to the Super Bowl. They are the clear favorites to contend for the Vince Lombardi Trophy again. Interestingly, the favorites from the NFC are the current champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.
This season, Patrick Mahomes will have a new backup quarterback - the experienced Gardner Minshew, who signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders. Minshew replaces Carson Wentz, who remains a free agent.
Mahomes was drafted in 2017 and has been the Chiefs' starter since 2018. He has never had a backup quarterback younger than himself - a sign that Mahomes is getting older and injuries are becoming more common. Of course, Minshew's arrival doesn't threaten Mahomes' starting role, but he is the type of quarterback who can step in at any moment during the season and perform well.
Mahomes is happy that Gardner Minshew has ed the team
Minshew has already been working closely with Patrick Mahomes and, most importantly, with the Chiefs' offense ahead of the season. His role is clearly defined as the backup, but he's ready to jump in whenever needed.
"I think having Gardner, a guy who loves the game, who comes in with the right mentality every day and takes risks, like we've been talking about," said Mahomes. "Having someone who pushes me to take chances on the field will be important to keep building our chemistry on the field, and also to push each other."
The Chiefs will be the fifth team in Gardner Minshew's NFL career. Throughout his time in the league, he's taken on the starting role with nearly every team he's ed: the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders.
His best season was with the Colts, where he started 13 of 17 games and earned his first Pro Bowl selection, throwing for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.
