- Philadelphia Eagles. Nick Sirianni scores big as Eagles sign him to multiyear extension
Replacing a Super Bowl-winning head coach is never easy-just ask Nick Sirianni. When he took over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 following Doug Pederson's departure, he faced a whirlwind of challenges, including managing his own players-starting with Jalen Hurts.
Sirianni stepped into the role four years after Pederson led the team to its first Super Bowl title in franchise history. His early tenure was anything but smooth, with persistent rumors suggesting his job was in jeopardy.
Fast forward four years, and Sirianni has delivered Philadelphia its second championship, cementing the Eagles as a perennial postseason contender. NFL insider Mike Garafolo highlighted the magnitude of this accomplishment, particularly given the battle of egos Sirianni had to navigate within the team.
How Sirianni won over Hurts
In a recent discussion on NFL Network, Garafolo, alongside colleagues Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, dissected Sirianni's contract extension following the Eagles' Super Bowl LIX victory. While all three praised his coaching success, Garafolo emphasized a less tangible but crucial aspect of Sirianni's leadership.
"The other thing he does is he manages some tough personalities," Garafolo remarked. "You can include the quarterback in that one: Jalen Hurts. He has had a great relationship with him and bridged the gap between him and the offensive coaches the last couple of years."
But this relationship wasn't always seamless. After failing to reach the Super Bowl in the 2023 season, a rift reportedly formed between coach and quarterback. However, lifting the Vince Lombardi Trophy last February seems to have mended any lingering tensions.
From villain to hero in two years
Rapoport also addressed how drastically Sirianni's perception has shifted in the eyes of fans and the media.
"It's not surprising that Sirianni got a contract extension-we knew this was coming. This is richly deserved for Nick Sirianni. The wild thing, though, is that just a little more than a year ago, some people had him on the hot seat," Rapoport explained.
Now, however, Sirianni enjoys unwavering trust from the front office, players, and fans alike. The 2025 season presents the perfect opportunity for him to solidify that confidence, whether by reaching another Super Bowl-or bringing home yet another championship.
