- NFL. Cowboys fallout continues as Dallas icon blasts Brian Schottenheimer hire over Deion Sanders
The Dallas Cowboys have legions of fans and a history that is as iconic as their simple blue star logo. The Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles, one of only four NFL teams to have won at least that many, but Dallas remains in a long dry spell without tasting the ultimate success.
It has been 29 years since the Cowboys lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy, and the franchise's recent appointment of Brian Schottenheimer as its new head coach has not inspired much confidence from fans that Dallas will take a step forward in 2025 after missing the playoffs in 2024. Schottenheimer's elevation to the top job came amidst the Cowboys' close links to Deion Sanders, with many fans hoping Dallas owner Jerry Jones would hire away his former star player from the University of Colorado.

Jones: Cowboys were never close to hiring Prime
After Jones and the Cowboys brass introduced Schottenheimer as Dallas' 10th head coach in franchist history on Monday, the longtime owner detailed his reported conversation with Sanders, which became public knowledge as previous head coach Mike McCarthy left the team following the expiration of his contract.
"Just a conversation about the team, and about where he is, and his boys, conversation with his boys, that type of conversation," Jones said of his informal chat with Coach Prime. "Deion has a job."
Indeed, Sanders reportedly has been negotiating a contract extension with Colorado, and with the Dallas "distraction" now out of the way, the two sides could quickly reach an agreement that might make Sanders one of the top-paid coaches in NCAA football. Sanders led Colorado to a 9-4 season, with his son Shedeur standing out to the point where most consider him to be a top-three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
If the calculus -- and the luck -- had been different, perhaps the Cowboys would have had a shot to land Shedeur in April's draft, which may have enticed Deion to head back to Dallas. But that now is a "what if?" scenario, one of many Cowboys fans have debated and will debate as their team's championship drought rumbles on.
