Ever since Daniel Jones collapsed last season, it was known that the New York Giants would look for a quarterback at the end of the campaign - and so they did. First, in free agency, they signed the experienced Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and in the Draft, they surprised everyone by taking Jaxson Dart in the first round.
With their first pick (No. 3 overall), the Giants selected the spectacular Penn State defender Abdul Carter, and at the end of the first round, they stole the spotlight by trading for the 24th pick - and there, they took the Ole Miss quarterback. At times, it was believed New York would take Shedeur Sanders, but that wasn't the case.
In the days leading up to the Draft, the Giants interviewed Shedeur Sanders, which indicated that New York was interested in him. However, it has now been revealed that Brian Daboll, the team's Head Coach, always had Dart ranked above Sanders.
Jaxson Dart was always Brian Daboll's guy
One of the New York Giants insiders, Jordan Raanan, revealed that the Giants were eager to get the Ole Miss player, and they may have given attention to Sanders in the days before the Draft to mislead other teams.
"It started becoming clear a week before the draft that they were more interested in Dart [than Sanders]. He was Daboll's preferred quarterback," Raanan said.
Brian Daboll was immediately happy to have landed Jaxson Dart, who will look to follow a similar path to Josh Allen, whom Daboll helped develop when he was with the Buffalo Bills.
"I think he has a lot of the qualities you look for in a good quarterback," Daboll said about Dart. "He's strong, makes good decisions with the ball, throws deep, has athletic ability, played in a very competitive conference, and started young at USC. But he did a very good job throughout this process - in our meetings, on the whiteboard, in workouts, and on film, which we liked. I'm looking forward to working with him."
Brian Daboll will have his chance to remain with the Giants for a long time through Jaxson Dart - but the results need to come quickly. If the team has another season like the last two, his days will be numbered.
