Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Kyle McCord might have a future as Jalen Hurts' long-term backup, but that transition is unlikely to happen in 2025. According to ESPN, McCord will start his NFL journey by competing with Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third emergency quarterback spot, while Tanner McKee is expected to serve as Hurts' primary backup.

McCord, a 6-foot-3, 218-pound quarterback, was drafted in the sixth round (No. 181 overall) out of Syracuse, where he set an ACC single-season record with 4,779 ing yards in 2024. Before transferring to Syracuse, McCord was Ohio State's starter in 2023, earning All-Big Ten honors. His ability to distribute the ball effectively made him one of college football's top ers, and the Eagles hope he will develop into a reliable presence in their quarterback room.

This marks the second time in three years that the Eagles have selected a quarterback in the sixth round, previously drafting McKee in 2023. McKee has impressed enough to earn the No. 2 role behind Hurts, but his future beyond 2025 remains uncertain, as he could command a contract the Eagles won't be able to match in free agency. If McCord develops quickly, he could either step into McKee's role or become a trade asset for another team.

How to Bet the NFL Coach of the Year Award Market?

The coaching staff really like him

One fascinating element of McCord's journey is his long-standing connection with Eagles quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler. Loeffler, then Boston College's offensive coordinator, offered McCord his first college scholarship when he was only in eighth grade. Now reunited in Philadelphia, Loeffler will play a key role in McCord's development as he adjusts to the professional level.

The Eagles revamped their coaching staff this offseason, with Loeffler replacing Doug Nussmeier, who left for the New Orleans Saints. His experience working with young quarterbacks could benefit McCord, even if he sees minimal playing time in 2025. The Eagles' quarterback group remains deep, but McCord's presence offers an intriguing storyline heading into training camp.

McCord's future is uncertain, but his college production and strong arm make him a prospect worth watching. Whether he becomes Hurts' long-term backup or finds success elsewhere, his time in Philadelphia could be a stepping stone toward a larger NFL opportunity. Until then, he will focus on developing behind the scenes, waiting for his chance to shine.
